Melanie grew up on a farm in Western Australia. Her childhood was characterized by various family adventures to out of the way places around Australia, a menagerie of pets, and Christian parents who demonstrated a genuine walk with God. She became a Christian at a young age.
Melanie completed a BSc (Nursing) and a Grad. Dip. Pediatric Nursing in Western Australia before her first overseas experience in Pakistan as the nurse for a missionary school. It was in Pakistan that she met Marc Curless, now her husband, and discovered that they shared similar goals and values of what was important in life. Melanie traveled for several months and worked in Australia again before marrying Marc and moving to Indiana for two years.
The continuing desire to work in developing countries in a way that would make a difference in people's lives led to her to pursue graduate studies in Public Health and Marc a certification in education. They have spent the past few years in Asia including an internship with Food for the Hungry Cambodia and volunteering as a nurse both at Agape Orphanage and Grace International School in northern Thailand. Marc and Melanie now live in Phnom Penh, Cambodia where she works at a medical clinic as a nurse and trainer while Marc is a guidance counselor at Northbridge International School.
Melanie joined the Word Made Flesh community in 2001. She has a heart for assisting the WMF staff demonstrate effective ministry among the poor. She is currently is Health and Development Advisor.
