Monica was the first born to a family of Egyptian Christians. They soon became a family of five and Monica spent her childhood years in Des Moines, IA. She asked Jesus to be Lord of her life at age seven, but did not really begin to understand the fullness of a relationship with Him until she was in 7th grade when she rededicated her life to Christ at a camp. She treasures memories of a neighborhood full of kids and wonderful imaginary places, long visits from grandparents and travels to the other side of the earth to spend summers in the childhood homes of her parents. Monica's love for travel, other cultures, and music began during these early years.
In high school, Monica signed up for the youth group mission trip to Monterrey, Mexico. Her love for distant places was heightened and as she wrestled with the Lord over the poverty and sadness she saw in that city. She began to see in a whole new way His love for the world and His desire for us to give up everything to follow Him and share His love. She felt a call to simplicity that she is still learning to understand. After high school, she attended Taylor University for four years where she received her Bachelor's of Arts in Christian educational ministries with a minor in communications. Her heart for the poor and for the world has only intensified during her college years, so directly after graduating she joined a WMF Servant Team to Lima, Peru. She fell in love with the people of the street and desires to follow Jesus back to Lima and those beautiful people.
