Sheila was born and raised in and around Amish country, Ohio. From the time she was able to understand stories, she heard of her mom and dad’s travels overseas as missionaries, and at a young age decided she wanted to serve God in missions. When she was thirteen she went on her first overseas trip to Lima, Peru. She continued traveling during her summers until she was fifteen and traveled to Calcutta, India for the first time. Faced with poverty and hurting people in a way she never had before, she came home not necessarily wanting to return to India but wanting to be a nurse.

When she began attending Indiana Wesleyan University, she began to feel God’s tug on her heart to go back to India. The long days of nursing school then had one bright hope at the end: someday the classroom would be over and dreams would become reality. Sheila was first introduced to WMF through a friend. After graduation and working for a year, Sheila traveled back to Kolkata, India with WMF on a Servant Team, during which time God confirmed the desire to stay long-term.

During the two years between Sheila’s servant team and her departure as staff to Kolkata, Sheila worked as a nurse and found many excuses to leave Ohio and travel. The complaint of many of Sheila’s friends and family is that Sheila does not stay in one place for long. Although others may be more risk-taking and athletic, Sheila loves following friends and beauty to whatever adventure they lead.  Sheila departs for Kolkata in January 2010.
