Sumitra was born Aug. 30, 1983. She grew up the eldest of three children, with two brothers. As a child and young adult growing up in Nepal, Sumitra had several chances to hear about the good works of Christians but saw faith in God as the same as every other religion. Although she had been exposed to Christianity in this way, she had never actually heard the gospel of Jesus Christ until the age of 16, when she met her husband, Deepak Rai. She and Deepak were married in 2000, after which Sumitra began working as a volunteer in WMF Nepal's Karuna Ghar (Home of Compassion) with the girls living there. On April 6, 2003, Sumitra gave birth to her first child, a son named James.

In 2006, Sumitra became involved with the Living Church in Kathmandu and completed a four-month Bible school program there. Sumitra believes that although she had been a Christian for several years, it was during this period that her faith truly came alive. She has a great heart to see her own nation of Nepal come to know to the gospel of Christ. Sumitra began full-time employment with WMF Nepal in January 2007.
