Today marks the expiration of the interim constitution and the corresponding constitutional assembly which was put into place in May 2008. The constitutional assembly was the acting government and had the mandate of forming a new constitution for the country following the long civil war we lived through. Sadly, instead of forming a new constitution, all they got done was lots of arguing and political fighting. They got nowhere.
Most of the political parties have been voting to extend the mandate of the interim constitution, but the Maoist party, who were the rebels during the civil war, are refusing to cast a vote to extend. They want to see the current constitution expire and the government stripped of power so that, I suspect, they can step in and take over.
So as of today, unless something happens, Nepal will be without a government or a constitution. This could make things difficult for the community there. So please keep them in prayer and pray for the nation as they try to figure this out.
