july 2009
Dear friends,
This summer Kenley and I decided that we wanted to have a garden. We planted tomatoes, peppers and herbs at his house and window planters at my apartment.
I think that having a small garden in our homes has reminded us of how slow, methodical and deliberative life is. God has given us so many examples in creation on pace and sustainability. God didn’t create the heavens and the earth in one day…God did it over a season. Then why do we want to do everything all at once? Who knows.
The ease and so-called effectiveness of quick answers and results has permeated so many of our behaviors, thoughts and actions. I would prefer to use a microwave than stand in front of a stove stirring a slow-cooked soup. I would prefer to send off a quick text message to a friend than handwrite a letter. Instead of riding the bus or walking to different destinations in my neighborhood, I find myself preferring the ease and effectiveness of an automobile.
I’ve been challenged to take life cues from nature. I want to slow down and enjoy the current season of life. Daphne has moved to Minneapolis for her sabbatical and we’re getting our bearings without her unique contribution to our department and the wider mission of WMF. Kenley and I are enjoying being engaged. It’s a beautiful season of our lives. We get to celebrate the miracle of love with our friends and family. Continue to pray for us as we transition into this new season of life together.
SUPPORT UPDATE:
My support account balance as of May 31, 2009 is -3,523.48. This number is daunting and honestly really frightening. I am thankful for those of you who continue to support me and those of you who have recently increased or began giving. I admit, I do wish that I could win the lottery and this would all be over, but alas, I reread my own prayer letter and remember that life isn’t about quick fixes or results. I ask that you stand in prayer with me as I consider what are creative ways of raising support that honor the giver, our friends and myself.
Here are some areas where I need help.
• If you know of a church, organization or person who would want to give towards WMF on my behalf, please let me know their information or send them my information.
• If your job or organization participates in any type of matching program, would you consider that opportunity for me? All you have to do is send us the paperwork, and we do the work.
• If you’ve considered giving towards WMF, now is a great time as ever.
Thank you for being in my life, I couldn’t be here without your friendship, support and prayers.
Respectfully yours, js
thank you for being in OUR lives.
